Newly arrived migrants and multicultural community members in Nhill and Horsham will have the opportunity to build confidence, independence and safer driving skills this June through the return of the Road Safety for New Arrivals (RSNA) program.
Delivered by Wimmera Southern Mallee Development (WSMD) Settlement Services, the program supports people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds aged over 21 to better understand Victorian road rules, licensing systems and safe driving practices.
The training includes five core road safety sessions, opportunities to meet Victoria Police Highway Patrol through demonstrations and Q&A sessions, and professional paid driving lessons for participants.
WSMD Settlement & Migration Program Manager Sara Barron said learning to drive and obtaining a licence were among the most important early settlement goals for many new arrivals.
“Driving is essential for independent living in the Wimmera. Over the past several years, WSMD Settlement Services has delivered road safety and licensing support programs across Nhill, Horsham and Stawell, helping newly arrived community members build confidence and independence on Victorian roads,” Ms Barron said.
“The program provides practical road safety education, support to convert international licences, assistance gaining learner permits, and access to driving lessons. This gives participants tools to become safe and confident drivers as quickly as possible.”
“This training also helps newly-arrived community members build the confidence, knowledge and practical skills needed to safely navigate Victorian roads, gain independence, and participate more fully in community life.”
LEARNER LICENCE SUPPORT
Participants attending the Horsham training will also have access to additional Learner Licence Support Sessions at Horsham Neighbourhood House from 5:30pm–7pm on June 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18.
