A new children’s picture book featuring Harrow & District locals will be launched on Sunday, October 26, at the Harrow Recreation Reserve, with a full afternoon of family-friendly activities planned.
Pumpkins on the Run, written and illustrated by Simone Dalton with help from local children, tells a magical tale of three runaway pumpkins trying to escape the soup pot, with two determined police officers hot on their trail.
The story was created during June and July this year through a workshop run as part of the We’re Better Together Partnership.
The Partnership was one of 11 drought resilience projects funded from the Future Drought Fund and coordinated by Wimmera Southern Mallee Development over the past 2 years.
Seventeen local children and a number of adults—including business owners, seniors and farming community members—feature in the book, which also highlights many familiar Harrow locations.
The official launch will be conducted by Jess Adler from Wimmera Southern Mallee Development at 3pm, but the fun will start earlier. From 1–3pm, children can take part in sporting and craft activities before the formal launch begins.
To celebrate the pumpkin theme, locals are encouraged to bring pumpkin-inspired afternoon tea to share. Prizes will be awarded for the best sweet, savoury and junior creations. Guests are also invited to add a “touch of orange” to their outfit—whether it’s a scarf, ribbon or a head-to-toe orange look.
Organiser Kate Eats said the project is a real celebration of community creativity.
“This book was one of many activities run by our Partnership and it features so many familiar faces and places,” she said.
“All people involved in the book’s creation will receive a free copy, and others are encouraged to buy a copy on the day. Please remember to bring cash as we won’t have EFTPOS available.”
Fiona Treliving from Harrow Neighbourhood House said sporting activities will be led by Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly.
“We love our sport in Harrow & District, and WRSA will give children the chance to try different activities,” she said.
“At 2:30pm there’ll also be a chance to talk with Sports Assembly staff about ideas for local sport.”
Local children involved in the book are equally excited. Ten-year-old Eloise Eats said:
“It was an amazing experience. I dressed up as a policewoman and we decorated pumpkins. I’m looking forward to going to the book launch.!”
Pumpkins on the Run will be available for purchase at the event, with proceeds supporting future We’re Better Together initiatives.
