Nhill Karen community members will feature in a free screening of the film Shared Table – Regional Heroes at Federation University, Horsham next Thursday, March 26.
Written and Directed by award-winning author and disability advocate Nandita Chakraborty, Shared Table is a conversation of identity, migration, racism and belonging, often centred around food.
It is being presented as part of Fortnight Fest, which celebrates Harmony and Cultural Diversity weeks across the region.
As well as the Karen, community, the film explores the lives of Hazara (Afghanistan), and Nepalese migrants who have made their homes in regional Victoria.
The evening, which starts from 5.30pm, will also include a talk from Ms Chakraborty and the chance to ask questions to a panel of cast members.
Ms Chakraborty said the film had been produced by CALD Community Voices and was the brainchild of its president Niru Tripathi.
“It’s all about bringing people together and about how we can bring a shared table and shared culture.
“In a world marked by division this film brings people together through food, conversation, and listening.
“By sharing the stories of those who nourish us, Shared Table gives them visibility and reminds us that it is our shared responsibility to shape a modern table – where meals and voices come together in connection,” she said.
WSM Development Settlement manager Sara Baron said the screening was an excellent chance to hear the lived experiences of our region’s migrants and better understand their valuable contributions.
“It also highlights how food is so important in starting these conversations.
“When sitting around a table viewers will see how stories unfold naturally of migration, loss, resilience, hope and belonging.”
She said the evening would begin with a talk from the film’s director Nandita.
“We are also excited to be running a panel session including, cast members including Nandita, Niru from CALD Community Voices, Annette Creek from Nhill Learning Centre and Chan Ouy from Dimboola.
“I encourage people to come along to this important event which is part of our regional Fortnight Fest celebrations right across the Wimmera Southern Mallee.
“This Fest concludes on Saturday with a Diversity event at Jaypex Park in Nhill from 10am to 1pm which will feature performances, food and market stalls.”
